Drupal Camp England Accessibility Session

We recently attended (and sponsored) Drupal Camp England. We had a great time meeting old friends, making new ones and learning about all the cool stuff happening with Drupal and the Drupal Community. Thanks to everyone involved in the event, we’ll be there again next year.

On the day, our accessibility lead, Maria Young, presented a session entitled, "Designing for All Minds: Enhancing Cognitive Accessibility in Drupal"

In the session, Maria delved into cognitive accessibility, an often overlooked side of web design that matters hugely for people with cognitive and learning disabilities. Maria shared practical steps and tools available for using Drupal to build more inclusive sites, drawing on the latest guidelines from the W3C's COGA Working Group and highlighting innovations around personalisation and adaptation, and how these can make websites more responsive to individual user needs.

Key takeaways from the session included:

  • Cognitive disabilities affect how users process information, focus and navigate digital content.
  • Clear structure, simple language and minimising distractions can help create more inclusive web experiences.
  • How design choices can unintentionally create barriers for users with cognitive differences

Drupal Camp England says, “If you want to make the web more accessible for everyone, this session is a must-watch!”
